Events celebrated in Amsterdam (January) -

New Year  - New Year is an occasion of great festivity in Amsterdam and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The New Year eve (Oudjaarsdag) and New Year day (Oudjaarsavond) is celebrated on a grand level here. As it is the time of biding good bye to the old year and welcoming the new one so New Year have a great charm of itself. For the same reason 31st December is also referred here as ‘Oud en Nieuw’ (Old and New). Everyone either young, old or a kid, all seems to be greatly excited to welcome the new session.

A large crowd of people could be seen in the streets and squares of Amsterdam enjoying among them self. Dam Square, Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt and Leidseplein are the main sites of entertainment and enjoyment. Nieuwmarkt, being the heart of Chinese community looks especially wild with full of firework. On this eve the sky looks beautiful with firecracker all over. The kids seem to be prepared with all sorts of crackers and as soon as the sky grew dark the shooting and lighting of crackers and sparkles get started. Bridges present throughout the city are the best place to grab the beautiful look of the city.

One may experience and collect a lot of memories of grand parties celebrated on account of New Year in almost every restaurant and cafes. Everyone seems to enjoy the New Year party with a bottle of Champagne in their hand except those who are busy in fireworks.

You will hear everyone wishing ‘gelukkig nieuwjaar’ meaning ‘Prosperous New Year’ to each other so better to practice saying it in advance. Celebrating New Year in Amsterdam could be the memorable one with the breath taking view of fireworks and the grand parties. The locations where fireworks are displayed vary every year but generally held at Dam Square, Rembrandtplein or Nieuwmarkt. The Bridges like bridge over Amstel River and other bridges throughout the city is the best place for the calm viewers who are interested in just watching the fireworks. It’s just lovely to hear the loud sound of firework in the middle of the night. Even the roof of Nemo museum is also open for public to enjoy the vision of various fireworks.

If you want to enjoy your New Year eve in bars or clubs then it is better to buy a ticket in advance for endless parties are organized on this eve and you may miss the chance. But not to worry even if you can’t get the ticket, in that case you can enjoy the New Year eve party outside at the main squares. One can have an illuminated view of crackers everywhere. As it is a fun time so beware of fireworks and take care of yourself while roaming in the streets as it could be dangerous in the crowded areas.

The New Year day is an official holiday in Amsterdam, public transport work but that is also limited.

Realisme Art Fair  - This fair is dedicated to the artists of figurative art. Since 2003 this fair is organized once in a year in Amsterdam art galleries as Jaski Art Gallery, Gallerie Rademakers, Galerie Petit and other. Amsterdam is well – known for its old and rich tradition all over the world. The Dutch painters are famous for their art of painting for centuries. A movement called magic realism came in focus in 20th century. In this movement figurative paintings with figurative and mysterious scenes were illustrated. This tradition is continuous till now in the form of Realisme Art Fair in which realistic art collection is exhibited, the visitors are introduced with all possible realistic ways to draw and paint and also the related lectures are organized. The selected figurative artists are awarded with the medal on the opening of the fair.
