Amsterdam is a beautiful city that encloses various beautiful visiting places in its locale. Churches in Amsterdam are another tourist attraction of the city. Various Churches present here are the unique examples of architectural styles and patterns. Every Church clings to one or the other characteristic feature in it.

Cathedral of St. John the Divine –

It is the largest Cathedral in the world and is located in Morningside heights on the Amsterdam Avenue. It is built in a high Gothic style. The exterior side of the building, large rose window and arched ceilings are supported by flying buttresses. The space inside the church extends over 600 feet long and the peers to support the ceiling rise over about 100 feet high. The sculpture and art at door of the main entrance are the attractive features of the church.


St. Nicolaaskerk –

Also referred as ‘New’ churches. This is a unique example of Neo- Baroque style church. It contains eye- catching beauty both from inside and outside. It was built in 15th century around a 12th century tower, which is considered as the oldest part of the church. It is famous as the home to the Bovenwerk Organ. It’s an exciting place for the visitors who are interested to see Neo-Baroque Architecture or the ornate Catholic Churches. Although the Organ was damaged in a fire in 1834 but in 1835 was restored by H. Knipscheer and again by K.B. Blank in 1975. The name of St. Nicolas and ST. Katherine are engraved on two bells present in the tower. Henrick de Borch founded it in 1525. These bells are still functional. The Catholic Church gathers mass here every Sunday.


Wester Kerk -

The Wester Kerk is also known as Western Church. This church is very famous and have important place in the history as Queen Beatrix was married here only in 1966 and also for the grave of the great painter Rambrandt. Although at that time he was buried as a poor and unknown painter and thus his grave is unmarked. This church holds the tallest tower of any of the churches in Amsterdam. They rise to a height of about 85 meters above the city. Blue orb and gilded weathercock adds to its beauty. The marvelous views of carillon and other breathtaking sites could be enjoyed from the steps of the tower. It’s tower are the unique example and most important landmark of architecture and magnificent beauty. The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1620 and was completed in 1638. A collection of spectacular images could be done here. The Church was built as an expansive building as to facilitate caters for the religious needs of the inhabitants of northern part of the ring of canals.


Noorderkerk (North Church)-

This church was built on a short scale for Jewish church- goers in the Jordaan area. It is located in the northern part of Jordaan in Amsterdam. This Roman Catholic Church was built in between 1620 and 1623 and was given the shape of a broad Greek cross with a pulpit in the center. For this design four triangular houses were built in the angle of cross. The design became common after building of the church for the Protestant churches throughout the country. A classical musical recital is organized in the church every Saturday from May to September. Hendrick Staets took up the charge of completing this church after the death of its original architect. The church retains its original beauty in the present time also when the surruounding town has mordenized.


Zuiderkerk -

Zuiderkerkalso called South church. Zuider means south and Kerk means church. Hendrick de Keyser designed it. As it was a protestant church so tower was allowed to build in it. It is about 80 meters high and one of the finest and unique towers in Amsterdam. Tower has square base lead by an octagonal element that is partially covered with sandstone and decorative ionic pillars in addition to the wooden spire, which is covered with lead. It is one of the wonderful tourist attractions. A breathtaking sight of the city can be viewed from the top of the tower. It is also famous as the first Protestant church in the Netherlands. It was built in between 1603 and 1614. Now a day it is used for an exhibition on town planning. The architecture style of the church is referred to as pseudo-basilica. The top gables were decorated in Renaissance style. Its designer Hendrick de Keyser was buried here only. In 1921, on the three hundredth anniversary of his death, a memorial stone was also placed on the top of his tomb.


Oude Kerk -

Oude Kerk also called Old Church is dedicated to the Amstedam’s patron saint, St. Nicholas. It is the oldest church in Amsterdam. Many of the famous people of Amsterdam have been buried here. The church was fiercely looted in 1566 due to some religious reason and most of the altars, artwork and other belongings were destroyed or stolen. Only the artwork that was out of the reach of the looters was left. The church was used as a sleeping shelter for destitute and travelers. Peddlers also used to come here to sell their products. In 1578, married couples had to register their marriage and had to pass through red door, as it was center for the matrimonial affairs at that time. Many concerts are often held here and the pleasing sound of carillon could be heard here daily. Today also the ancient organs and stunning stain glass windows are the striking features for visitors.
