Amsterdam is famous for its waterways all over the World. It looks beautiful with a number of large and small canals encircling the town. In other words the canals are the treasure of the town. The days here are cool and modest and the nights are charming here. Especially the illuminated view of the canals at calm nights has the magical effect on viewers. Some of the canals that would definitely add to the enjoyment and help to make a trip unforgettable-
Herengracht - It is one of the main three canals and has its own grandeur. The wide mansions, gardens and coach houses add to its beauty. The Gold Bend part of this canal is very famous.
Keizersgracht - canal lies between the other two major canals Herengracht and Prinsengracht. It is the widest of the major canals.
Prinsengracht - This is the longest canal among the other major canals. One can visit Noorderkerk, Noordermarkt, Westerkerk etc. while visiting this canal.
Singel - This is the inner-most canal of Amsterdam’s semicircular ring of canals. The canal runs from the IJ bay to Muntplein square near Central station and meets the River Amstel.
Kloveniersburgwal - This canal runs in South from Nieuwnmarkt to River Amstel on the edges of the medieval city. Few prosperous mansions are located in the east side of the canal. Former headquarters of the colonial East India Company that has now been converted to the library for University of Amsterdam can also be seen here.
Zwanenburgwal - This canal flows from Sint Antoniessluis to the Amstel River. Originally it was named after the textile trade as Verversgracht canal means ‘dyers’ canal. It’s a famous street also and the famous painter Rembrandt used to live here in the past.
Reguliersgracht - It lies near Rembrandtplein in the Eastern Canal Belt. View of seven bridges situated at convergence of the Keizersgracht and Reguliersgracht is awesome. The lighted bridges crossing the canal add to its beauty. Even seven bridges Jazz festival is also celebrated here. Small cafes, charming small hotels and restaurants are available at its side for the visitors.
Leidsegracht - It lies near Leidseplein in the Central Canal Belt of Amsterdam. One can get feel a break from the busy streets as it is a block away from Leidsestraat. The canal house of Leidsegracht looks beautiful with tree- lined streets and brick walls. The sight of back side and towering steeples of De Krijtberg Church in the north and intersection of big canal in the south gives a pleasant look and attracts the concentration of the visitors.
Brouwersgracht - It lies in the Western Canal Belt near Noodermarkt. This is comparatively larger. A number of excellent examples of Dutch architecture of 17th century in addition to former warehouses could be viewed from this canal. A part of it connects the major canals. The streets along with this canal are recognized as the most beautiful streets.
Bloemgracht - near Westerkerk, this is also positioned in the western Canal Belt. It is famous by the name of ‘Flower Canal’. This canal is in between Lijnbaansgracht and Prinsengracht and also filled with canal houses. It is a nice street and has become a center for paint manufactories in due course.
Egelantiersgracht - Situated near Westerkerk in the Western Canal Belt is near to Bloemgracht. This is one of the loveliest canals and has been named after a type of wild briar or honeysuckle. It is a calm and silent canal in a residential area. The tree-lined streets in this area made the leafy canopy over the water and the atmosphere becomes cool and calm when the flowers cover the bridges in summer.
Groenburgwal - This is one of the most beautiful canals of Old City Center near Zuiderkerk. It lies between Zuiderkerk and the Amstel River and is occupied with busy streets. The traditional Dutch single drawbridge is another spot here.
Leliegracht - Near Westerkerk, this canal lies in the Western Canal Belt. One can find a number of good bookstores here. Many of the canal cruises are discarded in this little canal. It is also known as the ‘lily canal’ and provides a unique view of the city to its viewers.
Oudezijds Achterburgwal - This is also a lovely and oldest canal that lies in Old City Center near OudeKerk. This area provides you with a excellent view of some historic architecture in addition to the coolness of surrounding trees. The University of Amsterdam lying near gives it a young and fresh feel. It was once known as the pensioners’ house and was the home to different convents and monasteries.
Spiegelgracht - Near to Rijksmuseum it is situated in the Central Canal Belt of Amsterdam. This is comparatively smaller canal. One can enjoy shopping here as there are many beautiful shops lining the street. This area is famous by the name of Spiegelkwartier and known for the antique collection. This is a busy area usually with bike traffic.
