The unique historical zoo and botanical garden in Artis

The Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, a fascinating and historical zoo, is the oldest here having been founded in 1838. Located in the heart of the city, the Artis Zoo is located close to other areas such as Zuidoostbeemster.

The zoo is a unique combination of history and natural beauty, housing hundreds of different animal species, thus making it an excellent place for a family day out. There are other areas of interest too, such as the museums, plants, exhibitions, and the Planetarium.

In addition to being a zoo, Artis is also a botanical garden. Besides many native plants and trees, many plant species have been gathered from all over the world. Those species of plants that are not at home in our climate are to be found in greenhouses and heated buildings.

Every year, from January to about May, thousands of tulip bulbs bloom in Artis. In addition to the familiar tulips, daffodils and crocuses, there are also less well-known species such as the yellow star of Bethlehem, alpine squill, iris and glory of the snow. Even in the winter you can find bulbous plants in bloom, such as the common meadow saffron and the saffron.
