13th July was the festivity day for Amsterdam when the Dutch soccer team after participating in the final World Soccer Championship returned home. This home welcoming celebration took place in the form of a grand orange party. First of all the prime minister greeted the Dutch team in Hague and then they had a meeting with Queen Beatrix at her Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. After this meeting, a helicopter whisked the team to Amsterdam.

Although Holland did not win the trophy yet Dutch team was honored by the city for attaining the second place in the World Soccer Championship. The victory tour had been arranged in Amsterdam on this grand occasion. In the afternoon, after reaching Amsterdam by helicopter the team was taken to a boat tour through the IJ River and the canals of Amsterdam. Thousands of fans lined the Amsterdam’s canals to cheer up the runner up team. Flags were draped in many of the houses along the canal and even giant footballs were hanging from some of the facades. The members of the Dutch Soccer team were able to greet more of the people during canal parade across the canal system in Amsterdam. To have a closer view of the soccer players many of the viewers even jumped into the water. After the boat tour the team was honored with an official open air party at the Museumplein square. Unexpectedly, a large crowd was present in Amsterdam to witness this wonderful event.

After the success of Dutch Soccer team over Uruguay, everyone in the country is now looking forward for wining the title of ‘World Championship, of the Dutch Soccer Team. After 1974 and 1978, this is the third time when Netherlands had reached the final. The groundings have already been made to host the Victory Parade in the capital city of the country, Amsterdam, if the Dutch Soccer Team wins the match against Spain on coming Sunday i.e. July 11. This ceremony will include boat tour through Amsterdam followed by festive ceremony at Museumplein Square. About a million visitors are expected to get involved in this grand event. In past, this parade was organized when the team won the European Soccer Championship in 1988. The team was cheered by the crowds that were assembled next to the canals of Amsterdam while moving on the boat tour. At that time many of the houseboats were damaged and some other sank as the crowd stepped on the roofs of the houseboats. This time the city has made all the arrangements to prevent any such chaos that happened in 1988. Even if the team does not win the world cup then also a reception event will be conducted at Museumplein in Amsterdam for the team.

The electronic smart card system ‘OV chipkaart’ is going to roll out around Netherlands and becoming the new national public transport ticket. The old ‘Strippenkaart’ is set to be replaced from 3rd of June with OV Chipkaart. This ticket will be will be accessible for all the public transport trains, metros, buses and trams. ‘Ov stands for ‘Openbaar Vervoer’ that means ‘public transport’, in Dutch. Now all the Public transport on all long run will be paid through an electronic pass ‘OV chipkaart’ in the Netherlands.

This electronic pass is introduced in stages as the project is technically complicated as it covers the entire network of the country. Thus it is planned to use this card as obligatory in Amsterdam. The card is already in process in Rotterdam. ‘Amsterdam all in 1 travel ticket’ is also available at Schiphol Airport. Through this OV card it will be possible to travel unlimited within Amsterdam on bus, metro or tram for 24 to 96 hours. Besides that 2 single train rides from Amsterdam to Airport has also been included. If you expect to walk more in your trip then the option of buying the disposable card each time you use a tram or bus is possible. It would be a little expensive to buy OV chipkaart on the buses or trams.

Passenger will have to check in and check out while moving on their respective trip. The use of the card is quite simple. You just have to swipe the card in front of OV Chipkaart reader machine installed at platform whenever you enter or leave the vehicle. A sound of beep will indicate you that you are checked in. The same process should be repeated in front of OV Chipkaart machine when you check out the vehicle. At some of the metro and train stations gate barriers have also been used. The Strippenkaart would become invalid in 15 municipalities around Amsterdam such as Marken, Volendam, Aalsmeer along with Amsterdam as this card is being used as an obligatory step in Amsterdam.

The cultural and heritage monument of nations industrial history windmill ‘De Otter’ can now be seen at its original location. The 17th Century was Holland’s golden period as hundreds of wood sawing windmills were constructed in and around the city Amsterdam that accelerated the ship producing ability and developing the nation as seafaring and powerful merchant nation. The windmill ‘De Otter’ is the only 17th century wood sawing mill that is located on its original location where it was constructed. Since 1638 this windmill is located just West of the Jordaan area in Amsterdam.

But as the real estate development took place the tall and high apartments around ‘De Otter’ seized the wind. According to windmill experts and foundation, windmill has to work for its maintenance and for that wind is an essential factor. But at this location the windmill is getting deteriorate as it is no longer getting enough wind to work. So the foundation decided to quit and swing the windmill to a Heritage park in Uitgeest so as to provide it as much wind needed (about 15 miles North of Amsterdam).

The decision of Foundation was opposed by many of the heritage organizations and the city authorities are also not in the favor to give the monumental permission to the owner but is willing to maintain and conserve the windmill at its original location. Recently after carrying out a wind test the Raad Van State, the highest court of Netherlands, has decided that city authorities need not to grant any moving permit to the owner of windmill ‘De Otter’ as the windmill can catch enough wind on the present location so as to work and continue to exist. Now this important cultural property will persist to survive at its original location.

Giro d’Italia in Amsterdam, a long distance road bicycle racing stage race (the world’s second-biggest stage race) for professional cyclists, will be held over three weeks in May. After a race along the canals in Amsterdam, the first round will finish in the Olympic Stadium (built for the Olympic Games of 1928 held in Amsterdam). This will be either May 7 or 8, 2010.

The start of this famous Italian bicycle race in Amsterdam means that the 3 important bicycle races in Europe will all start in the Netherlands. The Tour of Spain (Vuelta a España) will start at the end of August in the east-Dutch town of Assen, and the Tour de France, the most famous of them all, will start in Rotterdam, July 2010.

Giro is an important event in Amsterdam as it means a lot of visitors leading to a lot of foreign exchange income. However, Lance Armstrong is expected to miss next May’s Giro d’Italia as he has announced that he will race in the Tour of California.

“I’ve decided to ride the Tour of California in 2010,” the American told Twitter

Armstrong had raced this year’s Giro for the first time as part of his comeback after three-and-a-half years in retirement. He ended up 12th before going on to finish third in the Tour de France, which he had won previously won seven times.
