Former Tottenham star and Dutch international football champion Edgar Davids is coming back to the vocation. Since 1991 Davids has been active in professional football but after parting with home club Ajax Amsterdam in summer 2008, this 37 years old champion had not played active football. Now he has signed a one year contract (as-you -play) with English Championship club Crystal Palace. According to this contract if he plays for London-based side, then only he will be able to earn. The Palace manager George Burley is glad with the deal at Selhurst Park and also for bringing back an experienced player. Now its Davids turn to prove himself against the pressure of Championship football. The zeal of this champion can be experienced through his words “ I just want to enjoy football and show the best I can do.” George Burley is also excited by seeing the eagerness of Edgar.

This home welcoming celebration took place in the form of a grand orange party. First of all the prime minister greeted the Dutch team in Hague and then they had a meeting with Queen Beatrix at her Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. After this meeting, a helicopter whisked the team to Amsterdam.

Although Holland did not win the trophy yet Dutch team was honored by the city for attaining the second place in the World Soccer Championship. The victory tour had been arranged in Amsterdam on this grand occasion. In the afternoon, after reaching Amsterdam by helicopter the team was taken to a boat tour through the IJ River and the canals of Amsterdam.

After the success of Dutch Soccer team over Uruguay, everyone in the country is now looking forward for wining the title of ‘World Championship, of the Dutch Soccer Team. After 1974 and 1978, this is the third time when Netherlands had reached the final. The groundings have already been made to host the Victory Parade in the capital city of the country, Amsterdam, if the Dutch Soccer Team wins the match against Spain on coming Sunday i.e. July 11. This ceremony will include boat tour through Amsterdam followed by festive ceremony at Museumplein Square. About a million visitors are expected to get involved in this grand event. In past, this parade was organized when the team won the European Soccer Championship in 1988. The team was cheered by the crowds that were assembled next to the canals of Amsterdam while moving on the boat tour. At that time many of the houseboats were damaged and some other sank as the crowd stepped on the roofs of the houseboats. This time the city has made all the arrangements to prevent any such chaos that happened in 1988. Even if the team does not win the world cup then also a reception event will be conducted at Museumplein in Amsterdam for the team.

Last Saturday, the New Amsterdam Town Hall witnessed the first ever awards ceremony in Amsterdam honoring the past, present and future athletes. The star of the night was Adrian Forde who had played under-16 football in Guyana and also played on the national team on many occasions.

The event which was organized by Marcia Ross and former national football star Ras Roger Alphonso kick started with a formal dinner. What followed was a night of entertainment and history of football in New Amsterdam and its genesis in Guyana during the 1970s. Executive members and ex-footballers also posed for some camera clicks.

Eminent guests like Commissioner of Police Henry Greene, former mayor of New Amsterdam Errol Alphonso and Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Colin Klass graced the occasion.

Greene said, “First of all I would like to say a job well done to the organisers and what they are doing with the youths here in New Amsterdam. What we need to do is keep them busy and make the youths productive. There is a lot of potential and ability in Berbice so keep it up.”

GFF President Colin Klass called on New Amsterdam Primary and Secondary Schools Foundation (NAPSS) to put on events of such caliber.

“GFF is ready and willing and is prepared to assure the growth of football in New Amsterdam. We are in the phase of developing a national league with the intent of having it grow into a professional national team,” he said.

Marcia Ross who is the secretary/treasurer of NAPSSs’ overseas branch said she was looking forward to more support in the future regarding female footballers. “Young female football players were represented this evening because we wanted to break the barriers by shining light on the females and we are looking forward to more support in the future.”
