The giant chestnut tree (famous as the Anne Frank Tree) which was standing behind the Anne Frank House in a private garden collapsed on August 23, 2010. It broke like a match on Monday due to heavy rain and wind. No injury has been reported. It was about 150 years old and a source of cheer, hope and inspiration for Anne Frank during her hiding period from the Nazis in the attic. It has been beautifully mentioned several times in the Anne’s diary “The two of us looked at the blue sky, the bare chestnut tree glistened with dew….we were so moved and entranced that we couldn’t speak. As long as this exist… I may live to see it. ”. The tree was set to be cut down in 2007 due to the fungal and moth infection. But owing to the protest of the supporters and the citizens it was decided by the officials that its life should be prolong by sheltering it with a steel frame. In 2008 this supportive construction was made. But the stormy weather bought the end of the monumental tree and it fall off with a loud noise. The spokesman for the incident says “It broke off completely about one metre off the ground “. To keep the tree live saplings have already been planted all over the world including Europe and USA and Amsterdam has planted 150 in a park.

The electronic smart card system ‘OV chipkaart’ is going to roll out around Netherlands and becoming the new national public transport ticket. The old ‘Strippenkaart’ is set to be replaced from 3rd of June with OV Chipkaart. This ticket will be will be accessible for all the public transport trains, metros, buses and trams. ‘Ov stands for ‘Openbaar Vervoer’ that means ‘public transport’, in Dutch. Now all the Public transport on all long run will be paid through an electronic pass ‘OV chipkaart’ in the Netherlands.

This electronic pass is introduced in stages as the project is technically complicated as it covers the entire network of the country. Thus it is planned to use this card as obligatory in Amsterdam. The card is already in process in Rotterdam. ‘Amsterdam all in 1 travel ticket’ is also available at Schiphol Airport. Through this OV card it will be possible to travel unlimited within Amsterdam on bus, metro or tram for 24 to 96 hours. Besides that 2 single train rides from Amsterdam to Airport has also been included. If you expect to walk more in your trip then the option of buying the disposable card each time you use a tram or bus is possible. It would be a little expensive to buy OV chipkaart on the buses or trams.

Passenger will have to check in and check out while moving on their respective trip. The use of the card is quite simple. You just have to swipe the card in front of OV Chipkaart reader machine installed at platform whenever you enter or leave the vehicle. A sound of beep will indicate you that you are checked in. The same process should be repeated in front of OV Chipkaart machine when you check out the vehicle. At some of the metro and train stations gate barriers have also been used. The Strippenkaart would become invalid in 15 municipalities around Amsterdam such as Marken, Volendam, Aalsmeer along with Amsterdam as this card is being used as an obligatory step in Amsterdam.

The cultural and heritage monument of nations industrial history windmill ‘De Otter’ can now be seen at its original location. The 17th Century was Holland’s golden period as hundreds of wood sawing windmills were constructed in and around the city Amsterdam that accelerated the ship producing ability and developing the nation as seafaring and powerful merchant nation. The windmill ‘De Otter’ is the only 17th century wood sawing mill that is located on its original location where it was constructed. Since 1638 this windmill is located just West of the Jordaan area in Amsterdam.

But as the real estate development took place the tall and high apartments around ‘De Otter’ seized the wind. According to windmill experts and foundation, windmill has to work for its maintenance and for that wind is an essential factor. But at this location the windmill is getting deteriorate as it is no longer getting enough wind to work. So the foundation decided to quit and swing the windmill to a Heritage park in Uitgeest so as to provide it as much wind needed (about 15 miles North of Amsterdam).

The decision of Foundation was opposed by many of the heritage organizations and the city authorities are also not in the favor to give the monumental permission to the owner but is willing to maintain and conserve the windmill at its original location. Recently after carrying out a wind test the Raad Van State, the highest court of Netherlands, has decided that city authorities need not to grant any moving permit to the owner of windmill ‘De Otter’ as the windmill can catch enough wind on the present location so as to work and continue to exist. Now this important cultural property will persist to survive at its original location.
