Amsterdam houses faced with a threat of collapse
Amsterdam is basically a city of canals and very few people know that when the city was built, it was all only a swamp and unfortunately, peat is not the best conceivable supporter for brick. To overcome this problem, the residents of the city made constructions possible by driving huge wooden poles into the bog until it hit firmer ground and then building their houses on top of this wooden foundation.
Now, with changes in global conditions and changing climate, there have been frequent and long droughts which have lead to the lowering of the water level, thus leading the poles to dry out and crumble. This has posed a dangerous threat of collapse to the houses and buildings of the city.
The greater danger stands before the privately owned houses because the housing corporations have already replaced their pillars.
However, a spokesperson of Waternet says that “there is no need to panic, this won’t be an issue before 2040.”
